The ongoing works in connection with the Bosphorus tunnel passage and the Marmaray Project have caused the Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci train stations to come under threat of being disserviced. Furthermore, within the framework of the Marmaray CR1 construction, the double track railroad between Haydarpaşa – Gebze and that between Sirkeci – Halkalı, will be built as a triple track; this will require the destruction of many buildings of historical heritage value such as train stations, nearby residences, bridges or underpassages, and other establishments existing on these two sections of the rail lines; or, by desplacement of the station points, all will be simply rendered useless.

Against such negative eventualities the various components of the Haydarpaşa Dayanışması (Haydarpaşa Support Group) have undertaken activities which are continuing to the present . In 2007, an application was filed to the İstanbul Tabiat ve Kültür Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulları (Councils for Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage of Istanbul) by the BTS ( Public Transportation Union) , MIMARLAR ODASI ( Chamber of Architects) and ICOMOS in order to have Haydarpaşa - Gebze and Sirkeci – Halkalı railroads and the related cultural establishments in their vicinity declared as 'railroad industrial heritage' , thus hoping to put such industrial heritage under secure protection.

Almost a year after our application, a decision is stiil to be reached. We are expecting you to participate in this signing campaign to support our 'railroad industrial heritage' application . The collected signatures will be forwarded to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, to the Council for Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage of Istanbul , to UNESCO, to the Ministry of Culture, to the Directorate of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, to the Turkish State Railways and to the DLH .

On September 25, 2008 the list of roughly 20.000 signatures collected during our campaign was mailed to the indicated addresses.
